Tips and Tricks for surviving Mercury Retrograde

On September 9 at 11:38 p.m. ET, Mercury will station retrograde in Libra. So what does that even mean? Mercury is the smallest planet and in astrology it rules communication, information, logic, and transportation (in relationships, electronics, etc). When a planet goes retrograde it means that it appears to be going backwards. What it actually means is that the planet is moving slower than the earth around the sun for a period of time. This is an optical illusion. Astrologers believe that during this perceived backwards motion, technology and communication could get disrupted. This energy can be felt in the retroshade (the two weeks before Mercury Retrograde) and retroshadow (the two weeks after Mercury goes direct).

Mercury Retrograde happens 3 to 4 times a year. This time it is in the sign of Virgo and Libra. I was actually born almost 3 weeks late and in the dead center of a Mercury Retrograde. I typically feel it very intensely at this time of year. This has already proven to be true in this retroshade. I have some basic things that I do to help me survive this time frame.

  1. Be intentional. That means before I put my feet on the floor, I set my intentions for the day. Sometimes that simply means that I take a deep breath and move through my morning being very present, which for me is always a struggle. Other days, it means setting 5 different alarms in my phone to remind me of the basic things like eating and taking deep breaths. Protect your energy, especially if you are an empath.

  2. Don’t call them, and don't answer. Since this is the planet that rules communications and is in retrograde - it's going to bring all the blasts of the past. This means that your ex is thinking of you and may call. It can also mean that you start thinking of them (cause synchronicity, am I right?). You (or they) may start romanticizing the relationship and not be able to recall the real reasons why you chose to separate. This is especially true in the sign of Libra. Libras are all about friendships and romances. We love the beauty and drama of it all. So buckle up and expect a call. When that phone rings or when you might feel the urge… JUST SAY NO.

  3. Keep a journal. This a great alternative to reaching out to that old lover or to that ex-best friend. Save this journal for the next Mercury Retrograde (which is just around the corner on December 29th). Pull a Tarot card for yourself every day during this time and write your interpretation with the date and time and whatever else is on your mind that day. This will help you see the patterns and help you use the experiences you have during MR to your benefit. This doesn't have to be a bad time. Growth, charge and healing can and will occur. This can be positive, even if it's painful and disruptive at the moment.

  4. Let yourself feel without acting on it. Take this time to allow yourself to grieve. If painful relationships or losses of the past are at the forefront of your mind, hold space for it. Be still in it. You can feel it without reacting. This is not the time to seek revenge for the injury you endured but rather to give yourself grace and to treat yourself with kind gloves. Pamper yourself the way you would a grieving friend.

  5. Know that this is temporary. This too shall pass. It may pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass! Mercury goes direct on October 2nd. Then you just have to make it through the retroshade. YOU GOT THIS!
